Today’s entry is about my favourite movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Jade’s Movie Recommendation!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an American sci-fi comedy drama film that was made in 2004. It was directed by Michel Gondry, and stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet.
The plot revolves around a couple, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), who fall out of love. To forget Clementine, Joel visits a special clinic to have his memories removed. He starts the surgery, but then he comes to realize what’s truly important to him and starts to take action…
This film is very artsy and clever in the way that it’s shot. To show the scenes in which Joel is re-living his memories with Clementine, CG effects are used. Although the CG is very simple, it helps to create some intense scenes that look like dreams (e.g. making things vanish, changing the size of people).
The use of CG makes this film very visually appealing, but what I like the most about it is the message. At the center of the film is the topic of relationships and remembering to appreciate things in life. It also makes you think of all the memories you have, and that all memories (both good and bad) are important in creating the person that you are today.
Although there are many surreal elements in this film, the message that it sends about the importance of love and experiences in life, make this film very relevant.
Useful phrases to describe movies:
Artsy – artistic, creative.
Intense – extreme, containing strong emotions.
Surreal – not seeming real, like a dream, strange.
Enjoy watching and please tell me what you think about this film!
