Twist your tongue with tongue twisters!

Have you ever tried to speak fast, but all you can say is actually just a mess of sounds? Fear not! Here is a good way to improve pronunciation, fluency and intonation all at the same time, thanks to tongue twisters.

皆さんは英語で早口言葉を言ったことはありますか?ぐちゃぐちゃになってしまったりしていませんか?心配ありません!Tongue twistersにトライすれば、発音も流暢さもイントネーションもいっぺんに改善するはずです!!

How to pronounce ‘L’ and ‘R’

L’s and ‘R’ can sometimes be a pain to say, especially in English. Here is a nice example to improve on this matter.

LとRの発音って難しいですよね。この2つの発音の強化にぴったりな早口言葉があります。

→ How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?
Here is another easy one;
→Santa’s short suits shrunk
Or
→I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice scream.
Try to say this slowly first, word by word, then increase the speed, and try not to make any mistakes, especially ‘CLAM’/ ‘CRAM’ and ‘CLEAN’/ ‘CREAM’.

最初は1単語ずつゆっくり言ってみましょう。噛まないで言えるよう、だんだんとスピードをあげてみてください。特に‘CLAM’/ ‘CRAM’ と‘CLEAN’/ ‘CREAM’ は要注意ですよ“!

About ‘S’ and ‘SH’, and ‘S’ and ‘TH’

Another problem in Japanese can be the ‘S’ sounds, sometimes mistaken with a ‘SH’ sound. If you have this problem, try saying this;

日本人が間違いやすい音、もう一つはSとSHの発音の違いです。苦手と感じていれば次の早口言葉に挑戦してみてください。

→She saw sheriff’s shoes on the sofa, but was she so sure she saw sheriff’s shoes on the sofa?
Again, start slow, then build up speed.
A shorter tongue twister would be;

繰り返し言ってみる、段々とスピードを上げてみてくださいね。
短い早口言葉もあります。

→six slimy snails sailed silently
If you have more trouble with ‘S’ and ‘TH’, try this one;

Improve your fluency

If you want to improve your fluency, and speak faster, you can try this very famous (but also very long) tongue twister.
→Peter Piper picked a peck or pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
What is interesting about this is that you can only practice small parts of this tongue twister.
